Unless something's changed, you pretty much can't use the GNU toolchain on
Solaris, it always required the Sun linker to get gcc to "work" (where that
word is defined very loosely, I gave up trying to support gcc there years
ago).
Yes, I've found gcc on Sparc to be challenging. I based by comment on using the GCC toolchain from the comment in the bug:

"It's a Sun ld problem (GNU ld silently groks the same object file), which can be reproduced with the Sun toolchain:"
