And in fact, OS specific stuff may not even be entirely necessary if
you are using a cross-platform library or POSIX libraries -- but these
should still be learned *after* you are familiar with what is standard
and supported by the most popular compilers (Microsoft VC++, gcc/g++,
Dev-C++).
