Also to the point, what do you mean by special characters? Control
characters (generally below ASCII 32)? DOS extended characters > 127? ANSI
characters above 127? Multibyte (e.g. Chinese) characters?

All except multibyte characters are single bytes. Like Brett says, a lot
depends on the compiler, environment, etc., but I don't see any getch()
would return two values, unless it is a "feature" of the compiler.
