Some 10 years ago now I remember my surprise when I saw a friend of mine playing wav files under Linux using cat filename.wav > /dev/dspout (or similar). I don't know whether you can still do this, or whether it was just an odd feature of the sound card kernel driver he was using, and it's definitely crude, but there you go.
