In the strictest definition, all files are "binary". Some just happen to be able to be translated to readable "text". Probably what you were reading was referring to storing and retrieving numeric data to/from files. Most of the problems are big-endian vs. little-endian vs. weird-endian and I ALWAYS get each type of endianness messed up as to what it means.
