Technically, it is following an on-topic thread - albeit barely. The
moderators are supposed to just stop the job spam* from getting to the
group (of which everyone does a fine job) and I ban the spammers every
so often. Although, as of late, I have noticed a significant decline in
the quality of the posts and, in some cases, have been reluctant to
accept them.

BTW, there might be a direct correlation to when Yahoo Answers
(answers.yahoo.com) showed up and the degradation in quality posts. I
encourage you to watch Answers for a while. What is impressive is the
average 5 minute or less response times to questions. The downside is
that most questions are asked in the subject line or a short
one-sentence description of the problem...habits that seem to carry over
to lists like c-prog.

Perhaps we need to re-evaluate the post acceptance strategy.

I'm beginning to think a set of well-developed "canned responses" are in
order to keep quality posts coming into the group while still answering
very newbie questions. I personally despise getting a canned response,
but that is only because such a response is usually completely useless.
So whatever response is used will have to have enough relevant
information for the response to be useful.

* Some jobs do get through to the group but that only happens when
recruiters pay careful attention and follow the rules very closely. All
jobs posted MUST go through me.
