Usually happens when a recursive function gets out of control. 
Recursive functions are an application security issue.

Read Safe C++ Design Principles, Chapter 5 (Security vs. Performance), 
subsection 'Recursion Overflows'.  The e-book is free for c-prog members 
and is located in the group's Books section.
