I can't say whether or not a Perl program would process the data
*faster*, but Perl provides more built-in support for text processing
and allows for faster development for these kinds of things of
programs. But if you aren't familiar with the language, there's really
no sense in discussing it further (and I don't want to sidetrack into
a deep Perl discussion on a C programming list).
