[c-prog] Verifying a float variable

I need to know if the isdigit will verify a float variable? 
Where can I go to learn how to verify a float variable?

I can't seem to find any more than a reference to it in the books I 
have. "A guide to programming in C++" and "C programming for the 
absolute beginner".
