VC++ 2008 is the latest version of the Microsoft compiler suite.  VC6 is 
outdated and about as ancient as Turbo C (not _as_ bad but still in the 
same boat).  The IDE in VC6 is inferior to the latest IDE.

In terms of VC++'s C/C++ capabilities, .NET is just a name used for 
marketing purposes.  It doesn't mean you'll be linking against the .NET 
runtimes.  Native executables are the default.

My recommendation is to use VC++ 2008.  The Express edition is free. 
And it includes the world's best C/C++ debugger in existence.
