IMO, the ANSI C/C++ Standards are light years behind reality.  Sockets, 
databases, GUIs, etc. are ubiquitous and cross-platform (or have 
toolkits that are cross-platform).  Plus, we have a whole bunch of 
people here who are knowledgeable in all the areas I just mentioned who 
work with those areas in C/C++ on a daily basis.  Why would we deny 
others access to that vast source of knowledge on such a minor 
technicality as the ANSI Standard?

That said, the main focus is learning C/C++ and that means focusing on 
the Standards first to get people grounded in proper development practices.
