The icon you see in the group's website next to each message is
the _Yahoo! Messenger status_ of the user. It has nothing to do
with the mailing list per se.
If you don't use Y! Messenger, you'll always see a gray face next
to your messages (indicating that you're not connected to Y!
Messenger), but that does NOT affect your membership here in any
way.

No, you should ask your questions here. IM'ing members to ask
them questions is considered impolite.
