Your first stop should be here: http://www.gamedev.net/ There is a large community of game developers there. Books won't make you an expert game programmer - experience does. Books can get you started though. Given that you use VC++, a number of options are available to you. DirectX programming is one route. Another route is XNA Game Studio: http://www.microsoft.com/games/ While I've heard good things about XNA Game Studio, it is C# based.
