Thanks so much for the advice! I ran the DOMPrint sample with my XML file (It did not have the editing errors that I included in my OP) and it worked just fine. A comparison of the DOMPrint code with my own indicated that I was using the wrong class as an error handler for the parser. I've changed the class and everything works great.

There are other problems with your listing, such as the absence of quotes around the xmlns attribute value and the presence of a semicolon after the xmlns:xsi value. Also, try replicating the problem with the sample applications, such as DOMPrint. My version of DOMPrint (which is a couple of years old) has no trouble with documents with a newline in a schemaLocation value.
