How can you say its not an usability issue. Their is wrong icon have set.
Icon it self says new creation and you till not getting.
As you said that you improving then its wrong improvement done.
So you need to do change and setup appropriate icon.

Hello,
With latest trunk,
I have setup sale_crm, Here with main menu sale and sub menu
opportunity have same icon.
Main menu sale have icon that indicate like new creation. And
Opportunity have same icon.
Their should be different Icon for Sale.
