Hi,
This is good news and bad news ... ! The good news is that Cactus may be
accepted as a top level project within Jakarta (subject to approval by
committee members). It means it would no longer be a subproject of Commons
but would be a project at the same level as Tomcat and others :) This is
very good news as it means more persons will know about Cactus, it will
attract more participants, ...
The only bad news that I can see is that it will mean a package name change
as the current package is org.apache.commons.cactus. That would need to be
changed to org.apache.cactus (yeah, it is shorter, which is good !).
The question I am asking myself is : Are Cactus users willing to accept this
package name change ? Will it cause big troubles ? Should we do it as the
same time as we release version 1.2 or should we wait longer ?
My opinion is that it is always preferable to do it sooner than later as
later means more code will have been developed with Cactus and more persons
will be impacted. However, this is my opinion and I'd like to hear from you,
cactus users !
Thanks for your time.
