Vincent and all,

This is great news. Cactus joins the august company of Struts, Slide, etc. I
think we should change the package names for the 1.2 release. I would like
to offer a "compatibility" option, but I cannot think of a good way to do
so. Obviously people can keep using both the 1.2 JAR and the 1.1 JAR since
they won't conflict with each other. So maybe that's good enough...

Cheers,

nick

Subject: [announcement] Cactus has been accepted as a Jakarta top level
project

Some good news for Cactus users ! Cactus has been accepted as a top level
project. It will no longer be a sub project of Jakarta-Commons but will be a
standalone project, at the same level as Tomcat, Ant, Struts, Velocity, ...

As you may have read on this list, I had announced a few weeks ago that
Cactus 1.2 would be delivered around the 15th of September (that's
tomorrow). In view of this major event, I would like to postpone the 1.2
release by a few days (possibly a week), so that we have enough time to make
the move to Cactus' new location.

All this should be very good news for everybody as it means Cactus is being
recognized as a mature framework. It also means Cactus will get more
visibility and thus more help to continue its development. However, there is
one drawback : the package names will have to change from
"org.apache.commons.cactus" to "org.apache.cactus". I have sent last week a
mail asking if that would cause trouble to Cactus users. I've received only
2 answers saying it was ok. I really think this is a change that must be
done ASAP, which is why I prefer to delay the Cactus 1.2 release and
incorporate this change within this release. However, I am still open to
suggestions (provided they come fast !).

Thanks
-Vincent Massol
