Xythos has a product called "WFS" which utilizes the subscription. You can set subscriptions up for files or folders, and you can get an email either within a few minutes or a summary daily of any modifications, reads/writes etc. I think this is what you are talking about.

Fascinating!  I've never heard of such a method.  It's certainly not
in the WebDAV rfc or spec.

Maybe you're thinking of CalDAV, for calendars?  That's a proposed
extension to WebDAV that a lot of collaborative software is starting
to implement...
