The legend which gave rise to the Meritxell pilgrimage is described
briefly on my web site. <http://www.chy-an-piran.demon.co.uk/vt47-2/>
"Andorran Legends".
I don't know to what extent the Meritxell pilgrimage is still observed.
In days past, when getting about was much more difficult, it served a
practical as well as a religious purpose. Rather like the annual fair
in an English country market town, it was an opportunity for people from
different villages and indeed from neighbouring parts of Spain and
France to meet to renew old acquaintances and make new ones.
If you can read Catalan and if a library can track down the book for
you, the following reference may be of interest: "Fiter, P. LLuis-Ignasi
142 pp, frontispici i mapa en
setzau, Tipografia Catolica, Barcelona, 1874."
