Thanks for setting me straight on Andorran independence; I knew the
nation was sovereign & a UN member, but didn't know the details. I think
the story of how Andorra became independent back in the 12th century is
fascinating. I believe Prof. Hartshorne was using this anecdote as
illustrative of forces in political geography. He wasn't interested in
Andorra specifically. One story he told, which I didn't share w/you before
is what happened during the French Revolution of 1789.
It seems the new republican Franch gov. sent a message to the leaders of
Andorra: "You're free now, you don't have to pay tribute to France
anymore!"
The Andorrans replied thanks, but they'd prefer to keep paying the
tribute & keep things as they were. They knew that if they accepted the
French offer, the Spanish Bishop of Virguel would assert his traditional
rights, & Andorra would have been promptl;y annexed to Spain.--Hartshorne
got a big kick out of this story, & used it to explain the realities of
power politics to his students.
Now I have one little question, & it's not a criticism at all of how you
run your great web site--rather, it's just my curiosity. It is, "If
Catalan' is the official language of Andorra, & French & Spanish are also
widely spoken there, why is the site in English?"
Also, please e-mail us directions to your cafe, so Nancy & I can visit
it the next time we come to Andorra. But be advised that we're not skiers,
& are a little old to be taking up that sport.
