Hi All,

Recently, in build snv_116, two utilities, parted and ntfsprogs, were
integrated in to Nevada.

Here is the Heads Up email:

http://opensolaris.org/os/community/on/flag-days/pages/2009052001/

The install team would like to start a discussion about the
possibilities of incorporating these in to the Caiman installers. We
would like feedback from the community with regard to how you all see we
might make use of these.

To start the discussion below is set of proposals for where and how we
could integrate these tools. I included this only to get the discussion
started by throwing some ideas out there. Nothing has been decided.

-For the liveCD installer, three possible levels of integration:

    1) Icon on the desktop. This allows users to use the tools if they
    want to repartition their disks.

    2) "Repartition..." button on Disk screen: User clicks and gparted
window appears over the Installer window (assuming this gparted has
a GUI). When complete the Disk screen is updated.

    3) Fully integrated into installer.

The thought is we should at least do #1, with #3 being the goal.
However, we do need to consider the support issues that could arise from
fully integrating these tools in to the installer.

-AI installer, three possible levels of integration:

    1) No integration with AI. It isn't clear to us if this is a
desirable feature for an automated installer. Your input on this
    would help.

    2) Included with the AI installer, and if a re-partitioning scenario
is detected, the user can utilize these tools to manually do the
    repartitioning as required.

    3) Included with AI installer, derived profile directive(or
something like that) to enable users to make use of these utilities.

It isn't likely we could manage the automated detection and
repartitioning that might be required if the user wants AI to do this
for them. AI would need some direction to do this.

So... let's start the discussion! Thank you in advance for your time and
input.

Regards,
sarah
