I don't mind the automatic part, it's  silently downloading it rubs  me 
wrong way. As Dave's pointed out, download may take time and therefore 
install  behavior may appear unpredictable.  i.e. first go around, the 
user did not see any devices.  On a retry the device "magically" appears.

BTW, would this behavior be the same for the text installer ?
