Dave blogged about improvements in install times in the latest builds, so I gave it a spin.
New machine (my old one died) so I'm running S10U6 on the metal, which is an Ultra 20 1218 (2.6GHZ) with 4G RAM. I'm installing into VirtualBox, allowing 1g memory, 16M video memory, and a 16G disk. OS0811 global CD 4.5 minutes to live desktop 48 minutes to install 3 minutes to login prompt on first boot Build 110 Failed to boot cleanly, hal errors needed to be fixed Install just under 10 minutes 6 minutes to login prompt on first boot For comparison, Ubuntu 8.04 2 minutes to live desktop 7 minute install Just under 1 minute to login prompt on first boot So, conclusions: The new install is much quicker than it used to be. There's clearly some improvement to be had, but it's now pretty acceptable. First boot performance is terrible, I thought it had hung completely, and the lack of actual progress indication by the happy face boot doesn't help. -- -Peter Tribble http://www.petertribble.co.uk/ - http://ptribble.blogspot.com/
