It never made it into any code other than the usage.

Can you elaborate a little more on this usage?  I'm trying grasp, in 
bigger terms,
what the idea of a "default" service would serve.

Would it be just an external marking that's used by the tooling?  e.g. 
we could
do things like "create-client -e <MACID>" with no other options, and by
default, use the service marked "default" for it?
