Indiana and Slim teams, Just prior to the break, Michelle Olson and I met with Wenling Chen. Wenling will be investigating translating Indiana documents. Michelle will be program managing this process. Translations would not be available till Q4 at the earliest, but we did come up with one idea for a January document prototype that I'd like your feedback on.
With assistance from Michelle, I'd like to take the existing Indiana Getting Started document and "open source" it as an XML document on a mercurial repository for the January release. This document will not change much between October and January, so it's a likely candidate for this prototype project. This open sourcing would eventually facilitate the translators' work. Please advise any comments or suggestions this week. I'd like to proceed with the prototype in December. Mostly we were just bringing Wenling up to speed on Open Solaris. And, Michelle is doing the program managing work with Wenling. Michelle has a great idea which I think I should try... She can help me setup a repository on Open Solaris where I can post an XML version of the Indiana Getting Started Guide. This would be a prototype for really enabling "open source" work on a document. I would work on my Getting Started in XML/Epic just the same as I do in SGML/Epic. The difference is that I'd have to do something like "sccs edit" to enable me (or others) to edit the book. My existing October Getting Started will probably not change much for the January release, so it's a good document for a prototype. Let's discuss this prototype option this week. I should get started with Michelle on setup next week if we decide to go ahead with this.
