Yep, that's deliberate. 

As part of trying to coexist with existing root pools on the
system, the text installer tries to pick a unique pool name.

I suspect the machine has a pre-existing root pool named 
rpool that's either active or exported. That's likely why the installer
picked a pool name other than 'rpool'.

This is intentionally done to keep a minimalistic ui although
feel free to file an RFE against installer/text-ui.

The current text installer does only cpio based installs.
When/if the capability to do pkg based is added, it would
