Go impatient and rebooted the VM. Couldn't even reboot the installer CD! Restarted Virtualbox and now it's working. VBox 3.1.6, the very latest. Seems like a hard to reproduce bug... Other than a warning about manifest imports, it came up cleanly. Great stuff!
