A couple of notes about the referenced document[1].

First, the JeOS project undertook it since it was an area of interest for their goals. Caiman and pkg have taken the position that we'd look at this once we'd done refactoring in the core packages, since there presently is a hairball around SUNWcs that makes true minimization somewhat ineffective. I'm hoping we'll get to that work soon.

Second, the goals of that document were not precisely for pure minimization. As noted in 2.1.1, it's meant to define a minimal *supported* installation, per the terms of Sun's (now Oracle's) support policies. Hence some of your comments later on, which rightly note that it reflects some business requirements rather than purely technical ones. Oracle's OpenSolaris-based products and other community efforts are likely to diverge here, so I think it'll be important to make clear the goals of any work we do so that there isn't a misunderstanding.
