This is useful if, for example, someone wants to batch a DC job. Do we expect users to tee the output of DC to a logfile for this?

I digress. The current DC has a notion of a simple-log
and a detail-log. That seems to have been adequate so
far, I have not noticed any outstanding RFEs in this area
either. So I'm tempted to not make a change here.
I agree that new DC is best to keep the way the old DC does logging. The document seems misleading though.

If new and old DC are the same, then the simple log will contain only error messages, and the detailed log will contain both error and informational messages. The informational messages will be useful for debugging.

Currently, DC logs informational messages as well to
the simple-log. For example, it lists which checkpoints
it ran and any output from those. The new DC will do
the same thing.

The current doc says the simple log will contain both error and informational messages, and the detailed log will contain debug information. This sounds different than the way the old DC does it.

I'm open to re-wording suggestions to make it clearer.

Thanks,
Alok
