Hi Jan,
Yes, I am available to consult on the UI design for this. (14.1.7)
The most important question from the UI design point is "Who is the
intended user." This is important in that the GUI installer was designed
for desktops and potentially non-technical users, so it was kept as
simple as possible. The text-based installer was intended to install
servers for evaluations and maybe small shops where AI would be too
heavyweight. Because of the server target we added some minimal network
setup that was almost certainly to be needed for servers.
Since this is being developed to configure non-global zones, is it
reasonable to assume that the users are expected to be sys admins, that
is, likely to both understand and want to configure additional items? If
so it doesn't help them to keep the SCI tool simple if they are likely
to immediately need to configure additional items separately. This isn't
a suggestion to add back everything that was in SysConfig, but if
something like IPV6 is likely to be needed by a significant portion of
users (I don't know one way or the other) then we should consider
including it.
So who is the target users and what items are likely to be configured in
non-global zones?

Hello Caimaniacs,
first draft of System Configuration Interactive tool design spec
has been published for review:
http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/download/Project+caiman/System+Configuration+Project/sci%2Dtool%2Dlatest.pdf
During this round, we would like to verify that the proposed
design fits the overall Caiman architecture and that we are
not missing any important requirements or features.
Thus the current version of document lacks details.
We will be elaborating more on them later after we verify
the overall vision.
Susan, if you happen to have cycles to take a quick look
and verify that we are on the right track from
zones point of view, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please provide your comments/feedback before COB Wednesday 9/22.
Thank you very much,
Jan
