Please review the simple changes for fixing the following 2 bugs:

error message to be more user friendly for an invalid pause checkpoint name
6998800 <http://monaco.sfbay.sun.com/detail.jsf?cr=6998800>
_load_checkpoints() uses the wrong variable in the handling of exceptions

I ran the install engine tests to make sure my changes didn't affect any
of the existing tests.
