Simply upgrade your system to Ubuntu Karmic in order to have a good support of the OpenGL. These drivers were buggy but not now !

It's slow but it uses CPU (but it uses fewer CPU). So it's not buggy ! But, metacity in compositing manager works well, and so compiz works (but very slowly, that"s why I prefer Metacity+compositing). Under the old cairo engine, the dock is slow and buggy but displays almost normally. Under the openGL engine, the dock is almost all into a black rectangle until the user mousemove over it. After that, the dock blink from the black rectangle to the normal display etc etc... But the dock (when it's visible) is very fast and display well the icons' animation !
