Ok I've forced it by using gtk_image_menu_item_set_always_show_image (core: rev 787 & plug-ins: rev 1995).
But for the menus, simply have a look to these two screenshots of Gedit menus: menus_have_icons = false (by default) => http://uppix.net/0/b/4/5546570d9a3bb52e0e97b6e72ebf5.png menus_have_icons = true => http://uppix.net/d/8/e/c643da1f28810df1baed9d7fadb01.png I think it's easier to find a menu if there is an image above it.
