I think that most users used to do some actions, e.g.: clicking on the top right/bottom left to logout. For me it's interesting to have redundancy but if something is different: the Applications Menu is different than the Unity dash, the Shortcuts applet has a completely different design than the Shortcuts applet of the Gnome Panel, etc. Here I think the logout applet is mainly designed for the session because it provides the same actions as the other ones and users used to click on the other one.
