Hi Troy I have to say that I am pretty happy with xajax. After a false start or two I have figured it out, and am now producing good code with it. Where as I found the ajax helper harder to get into (hence I went with xajax).
Are there any guidelines in the Cake project about what third party tools should be used/discussed/documented? My personal opinion is that the more variety and input the project has (even if it does mean doubling up on things like ajax/xajax occasionally) can only help the project in the long term by making it rich and diverse.
