Just to follow up.
I have done everything you suggested and have certainly made some
progress.
I now have things working fine. except that to reach my welcome page i
go to:
hostingnewmedia.com/app/webroot/
I also had to UNcomment out line 42 in app/config/core.php:
define ('BASE_URL', env('SCRIPT_NAME'));
How does that sound to you?
