Mark, you can set $displayField to a custom field that doesn't exist,
and add it to your results in the model's afterFind callback.

class Person extends AppModel {
    var $displayField = 'name';
    function afterFind($results) {
      // Loop thru results and insert ['name'] = ['first_name'] . ' ' .
['last_name']
    }
}

Then you can use the 'name' field in generateList.
