If you are having problems with your code like the original poster is upgrading eliminates the chance that a known bug in cake that has been fixed in the current release is not contributing to the problem.
There were also security related fixes that would be wise to apply.
It will also give you a chance to refactor portions of your code to look for possible causes to the problem. So you would be doing two things at once. Looking for bugs, and upgrading your project to apply bug fixes and security patches.
