Okay, perhaps I need to have someone with admin priveleges setup mod_rewrite. I didn't have access to it, and figured it wasn't major enough to cause a parse error.
As I said, I copy/pasted from the tutorial exactly, and verified it...it does, in fact, have the line var $name = 'post'; as the responder above suggested, and as the website instructs.
