What you want is a PRG (Post/Redirect/Get) pattern. Basically the user POSTs the search form, your script redirects the user back to the referrer page, but with a new GET parameter set to their search parameter.
Take a look at the CakeDC Search plugin (https://github.com/cakedc/ search) it includes all the functionality you want (plus more), is free and is amazingly versatile.
