I tried the following without success:

<IfModule dir_module>
    DirectoryIndex index.php
</IfModule>

<IfModule dir_module>
    DirectoryIndex index.html index.php
</IfModule>

The PHP page still worked, but I couldn't get the CakePHP page up.
