I think I solved this problem. I had the following code in the app
controller:
function beforeFilter() {
parent::beforeFilter();
if ($this->action == 'add' || $this->action == 'edit')
$this->Auth->authenticate = $this->User;
}
I added the following check and the problem went away:
if ($this->_loggedIn())
