I think:

• vanilla HABTM association
ModelOne hasAndBelongsToMany ModelTwo
ModelTwo hasAndBelongsToMany ModelOne

• simulated HABTM assocition

To simulate a HABTM association, perhaps to allow for more data in the
join table, you need to create a model for the join table, in this
instance, model_ones_model_twos, and associate that instead like so:

ModelOne hasMany ModelOneModelTwo
ModelTwo hasMany ModelOneModelTwo
ModelOneModelTwo belongsTo ModelOne
ModelOneModelTwo belongsTo ModelTwo
