Thank you for your input, lowpass, and excuse my late reply. I found out that what I had to do to get it to work the way I thought it would work was quite simple - despite my having echo $this->Js->writeBuffer(); at the end of my default-layout, I've included the line on every, which of course isn't all too elegant, but somehow just having it in my default layout doesn't work.
