inside your view you need to havesomething like this:
<?php
echo $this->Form->create('User');
echo $this->Form->input('User.short_status');
echo $this->Form->end();
?>
and then inside your controller action:
$user['User']['short_status'] = $this->data['User']['short_status'];
also before save, you need to specify what user exactly are you saving,
something like this:
$this->User->id = $this->Auth->user('id');
