Nice story Tracy :-) I went through a similar process to discover Cake. I didn't ever develop anything with Ruby on Rails, but I had similar thoughts.
Ultimately Cake was a no brainer for me. As you said, leveraging existing PHP skills, and a snap to deploy as well. It has been amazing watching Cake and the community grow and mature of the last year. My thanks too to the Cake team.
