Thanks for all the replies. I still don't see a working htaccess hack here. Auth would work but it's already configured for the admin section, I'm not sure how to easily roll that out for the entire site and then remove it. Doesn't seem very straight forward where a htaccess password protect would. It looks like cakephp needs apache configured rather specifically.
