Chris, you are exactly right. Building and benching in iterations is reasonable and realistic. Having said that, when you get to point where you **do** need to benchmark in order to improve performance, you will need to know the limits of the framework. No matter how much optimizing you do in the application and database code, you won't be able to exceed the framework's base responsiveness, unless you change the framework foundations in some way.
