Nicely explained solution woodsman.  I have been watching this thread
and wondering about the best solution.  That sounds like an excellent
approach.

Not entirely answering your question here, but:

Even without Cake, getting browsers to render html bit by bit as it
arrives isn't quite that simple (imho) - IE (<7 at least) only behaves
like this if the output is already quite large, or if the HTML is
structured in certain ways.
