Merge-in is also a good name :) The difference between your approach and mine is that in mine, we let cake do the work of getting all the files out of the right directories.
Very good point - yes I agree uninstalling merge-ins would be a pain because unlike plug-ins removing the folder is not possible. That is way I would prefer giving more functionality to plugins. Felix had described somewhere how to create API's for plugins....
